Excavation | Elevation launch event

28 October 2022

GoDown Arts Centre, Kilimani, Nairobi

Excavation / Elevation is a collaborative visual project by James Muriuki and Constance Smith. In October 2022, the first public iteration of this work was an exhibition at the GoDown Arts Centre, Nairobi. To launch the exhibition, we held a public event on cultures of construction and the manipulations of materials that underpin Nairobi’s high-rise transformation.

We were joined by Kujenga Group, an innovative Nairobi architecture practice, who shared their research and experimentation of working with locally sourced stone to develop new architectural vocabularies. Discussants Joy Mboya and Garnette Oluoch-Olunya of the GoDown responded with their insights on the project’s relationship to wider themes of urban change in the city.

An audiostream of the event is available below.
